By: Jarice Hanson
I chose the book 24/7 :How cell phones and the Internet Changed the Way We Live, Work, and Play because it seems like everyone in the world practically is impacted by a cell phone, internet or both. In 2009, cell phones and the Internet are the most common source of communication with others. Everywhere you look; everyone has a cell phone or has a computer at home. It seems if you don’t have either of the two, people would ask, “if you have been living under a rock”.
The book has nine chapters with 176 pages. The first chapter was called,”24/7: Anytime, Anywhere”. Chapter one talked about the definition of communication and information. Also , its states the definition of mass media and mass society. Mass media is specially designed to reach a large audience such as radio, television, and magazines. Mass society is a description of the modern era.
Chapter two was called,” A Cultural History of Cell phones and the Internet”. It explains the intentional and unintentional effects of both communication devices. Also, how the devices were used mostly for business but now it’s a combination of personal and business purposes.
Chapter three was called, The Haves, Havenots, and Don’t Wants. In the chapter, it looks at who uses Cell phones and internet the most. The younger generation of course is more into the technology of this day and age. Since there is such a generation gap, there is an issue that some people just chose not to use the technology which is considered a Don’t Want.
Chapter four was called, “Time Bandits and Space Cadets: Intimacy and Illusions of Control”. In this chapter, the key concept is about control. This means many lose control with cell phones and the Internet. Also in the chapter it states, how plenty of time is wasted and being on the cell phone and the internet which is becoming an addiction for some.
Chapter five was called,” Digital Democracy: Individuals and Society in Transition”. In this chapter, it explains how the technology that was created can be used as opportunities for greater viewpoints. Also, the chapter addresses the current use of applications such as podcast and blogs.
Chapter six was called,” Social Place and Scary Places”. In this chapter, one of the key points are about social networking and how many people believe that the technology created( cell phones and the Internet) is private and secure, which is not the case.
Chapter seven was called, “Bites and Fragments: What Do We Know? What Do We Own?” In this chapter, the key point was about copywriting. Also, it asks the question if we know the accuracy and validity of information.
Chapter eight was called,” Where have all the Phone Booths Gone?” In this chapter, it talks about the different artifacts one had before the cell phone or the internet. Also, how the cell phone and the internet popularity has increased over time.
Chapter nine was called, “Living in the Global Village”. In the finally chapter, it talks about how cell phones and the Internet are going to shape the future and it is not going anywhere, anytime soon. Also, how it will shape social practices in different environments.
I would recommend this book to anyone that is semi obsess with technology such as cell phones and the internet. The cell phone and the Internet were created for people not to misuse these devices but to enjoy. I found this book quite interesting because I am really fascinated in technology.
